Movies Galore!

The season has started! The season of movies they have been holding til the very end of the year, to keep them fresh in the minds of the voters for all the upcoming award shows. Wooohooooo! I love this time of the year.

I was privileged to catch three of the movies that opened this weekend…

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium… part of me was very sad that it was not better. It’s one I would recommend as a matinee. I took one very tasty morsel away with me, however. One of Mr. Magorium’s lines touched me clear to the tip of my heart: Your life is an occasion; rise to it.

Bella… a movie that has had very little advertising and is quietly sneaking in under the radar. A beautiful film about family and life and choices that have lifelong effects. A stunning cast presents one of the most genuinely warm portrayals of a close-knit family. With a Latino cast, part of the movie is in subtitles, but the emotions of those scenes are projected so clearly, you almost don’t need to read them. Good, good show!

Beowulf… I have been waiting for this movie for quite some time because I am a “special effects junkie.” I have been chomping at the bit since I discovered it is entirely CGI. I got lost in the “ooohs” and “aaaahs” and “holy crap! look how real it looks!” I was impressed, especially, with the character rendition of Sir Anthony Hopkins. This show has several brutally violent and graphic scenes, as well as some pointed potty-mouth-humor lines. For those that are “effects junkies,” this is a highly recommended movie, a feast for the eyes and quite entertaining at that. Not recommended for young children as the ghouls are quite fierce and gruesome and the killing of those ghouls is vicious and explicit.
