As I got ready for the day this morning, I was listening to my Pandora “Easy Listening” station and one of my favorite songs came on, “You’re Nobody til Somebody Loves You.” I immediately started singing along and swaying as I thought of my Grandma Faye and how she would belt out the tune in her best operatic soprano from the kitchen while she made delicious food.
At first, I was singing unconsciously, pulling the words from somewhere deep in my memory without paying attention to what syllables were rolling off my tongue…
You’re nobody ’til somebody loves you
You’re nobody ’til somebody cares.
Then I stopped singing and listened to the words that floated through the air to where I stood…
You may be king, you may possess the world and it’s gold,
But gold won’t bring you happiness when you’re growing old.
The world still is the same, you never change it,
As sure as the stars shine above;
You’re nobody ’til somebody loves you,
So find yourself somebody to love.
I realized what I was singing, ‘you’re nobody ‘til somebody loves you’ and I suddenly felt sad about the implications of what that means. And I stood there, brush in hand, and really pondered what it meant to me. As I listened to the timbre of Dean Martin’s voice flow around me and felt the tears in my eyes, I realized that much of the world believes that love comes at them from someone else and that, indeed, they are nobody if they are not loved by somebody else.
There was a time when I thought that for myself. It was heavily ingrained in my belief system that I had no meaning on earth if there was nobody that picked me, while at the same time believing I was inherently unlovable. There was no way I could win with those beliefs!
After many years of soul-searching and personal inner work, I’ve come to a place that is strangely familiar and, yet, utterly brand new. Surprisingly, I have fallen in love and feel so empowered with this new relationship. And the most amazing thing about it is, it came from within me. And, I’ve come to see that I am somebody because somebody loves me – and that somebody is ME!
The world still is the same, you never change it,
As sure as the stars shine above;
You’re nobody ’til somebody loves you,
So find yourself somebody, find yourself somebody,
Find yourself somebody to love.
So, find yourself somebody to love, like Dean sings, and make that “somebody” yourself first. Although the world may not change, it will seem that it has.
