Sometimes, Things are not as They Appear to Be

you you you
A quick snapshot and how sometimes things are not as they appear to be …

When I arrived at the Crane today, there was a man and a woman on the Red Couch in the cafe beyond the privacy screen. The woman was lecturing the man about how he needed to exercise more. She spoke of how she went dancing and walking all the time. She talked about all the people she danced with for hours on end every Friday night. She talked about workouts and finding ways to combine exercise with the outdoors. She spoke about his inability to walk to her house because he was so out of shape.

By the way she was talking to him, I imagined I would see a very large, rotund man with red, puffy cheeks and a heaving chest. I imagined that she would be lean and lanky, trim and muscular, and appear to be incredibly fit.

When I went to fill my water, I was surprised to see the dashing older gentleman with white hair lounging there on the Red Couch. His casual, but handsome outfit looked well-planned, there wasn’t a hair out of place, his shoes were shiny, and he was smiling broadly. He reminded me of my proud Grandpa Vic. I couldn’t really tell his body shape, but he didn’t look overweight. I couldn’t see her from where I stood. All I could see was her burgundy hair.

However, when they both came out into the store, I was shocked to see this trim man, walking slowly but upright and without any obvious pain. Beside him was this heavyset woman with a belly that wiggled and hung down beyond her middle. She waddled, more than walked and had a limp. She moved from surface to surface so that she could lean heavily on it as she walked. He, however, displayed no issues with moving about the space spryly, looking at everything like a happy child.

I would have never guessed it to be the woman speaking on the Red Couch, except I recognized the man and her burgundy hair. And when I did realize it was her, I had a moment of paradoxical mind shifting as I attempted to reconcile her words with the physical form she presented to the world…
